Almost every state requires motorists to have auto liability insurance, which pays the other driver’s medical, car repair and other costs when the policyholder is at fault in an auto accident, before they can legally get behind the wheel. Only New Hampshire does not have a compulsory auto insurance liability law.
Yet these laws continue to prove ineffective in reducing the number of uninsured drivers in the United States, a number that in 2009 was as high as 13.8% (one in every seven drivers). In Maryland, the percentage of uninsured motorists was over the national average, hitting 14.9%. Mississippi was the worst with 28.0% of its drivers uninsured.
